Tăuții-Măgherăuș - award-winning destination, appreciated by tourists
This time we will not take you down winding paths, across mountains and valleys, but stop at a stone's throw from Baia Mare, in Tăuții-Măgherăuș. The small town is home to a wide range of natural and man-made tourist attractions and stood out, especially in 2019, when it won first place in the EDEN competition for health and relaxation tourism. This important award made the city recently included in the Route of European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) in Romania, officially recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism.
As a starting point for the journey through Tăuții-Măgherăuș, we propose an incursion into the town’s museum heritage, which is proud of its unique collections. Most visitors to Maramureș agree that our county awakens a feeling of familiar comfort, similar to the once felt in the homes of their parents and grandparents and one can enjoy such experiences by visiting the "Home" Village Museum in Tăuții-Măgherăuș. The entire museum ensemble, which includes the house, the barn, the stable, the shed, the wood shed and the coop, once served as a real household. The last host of the traditional household, which is about three centuries old, was auntie Florița from Bozânta Mică. The museum's patrimony also includes over 300 exhibits that talk about the simple past and the traditional occupations of the locals. Certainly you have already heard that the people of Maramureș do not belong to the category of people who hide their past under the rug, but, on the contrary, they are proud of their roots. One could almost say that we have a sacred covenant with our past, which we not only keep in memory, but we make room for it in the ever more superficial present, thus maintaining a bridge to the pure authenticity of long ago. The second museum we invite you to explore is the Misistófalusi Kis Miklós Museum, which operates in the building of the old parish of the Reformed church and is a tribute to the first printer in northwestern Transylvania. Totfalusi Kis Miklós was a prominent figure in the Romanian printing industry, being famous for his overwhelming contribution to the printing of the first Romanian books. Here visitors can see vintage books, printing press components, alphabet patterns, portraits and extremely rare lithographs. Further on we head to Băița, a locality that is part of the town of Tăuții-Măgherăuș, where we visit the “Ion Șiugariu” Memorial House, dedicated to the poet-hero who distinguished himself throughout his life through an important publishing activity. Having to serve his country during the Second World War, Ion Șugariu ended up on the front, leaving behind a diary that describes the emotional impact of the experience on the battlefield. The small parental home of the talented poet and journalist houses several documents, letters and manuscripts describing the author's life in one of the rooms, while the second room represents a specific arrangement for the traditional dwellings of the miners in this area. In Băița one will also find a riding center that offers hippotherapy and equestrian tourism services where one can enjoy the presence of some of the most gentle and intelligent animals.
The rest place we suggest is "Ulmu Base", a unique place, to say the least, which promises a special experience. The "Ulmu Base" permaculture center is a didactic household, where tourists have the opportunity to stay in eco-houses built using the superadobe technique, but also to learn valuable knowledge about the ecological lifestyle, promoted by the founders of this original project. Also here, one can enjoy fruits harvested directly from the garden and obtained through organic farming.
Equally surprising is the church heritage of the town of Tăuții-Măgherăuș, which consists of two Orthodox churches, a Reformed church and a Catholic church. All of these buildings were erected centuries ago, and although they have undergone changes over time, they have survived through the care of good people. Therefore, tourists can take an inner journey, praying between the holy walls, built many centuries ago.
After all this back and forth we know you could use some relaxation and so we come to your aid. If you cannot think of a better place to relax than in nature, we guide you to the Nistru Lake, a tiny corner of heaven where a dense forest stands guard over a body of water. If you are passionate about fishing, we recommend that you take your fishing rods with you, as the lake is repopulated annually with various fish species. For those of you who do not compromise on comfort, we recommend the spa facilities in Tăuții-Măgherăuș, some of the most modern in the entire county. After all, no matter what your preferences are, we promise that this resort of local interest deserves a place in your travel itinerary.
